The graph below illustrates different accomodations and how many students live there, the data is split by individual decades of the last fifty years.
In the last five decades, there has had been a gradual increase in students sharing rooms in either a house or a flat. In contrast, students who lived as paid guest with a host family had a steady decline until 1980s. Although, the number of students who lived with familly also decreased steadily, it significantly increased in the 2000s.
In the 1960s, 35% of students shared houses with other students, this steadily increased to 40% in the 1970s, 60% in the 80s, 65% in the 90s, all the way upto 70% in the 2000s. While, 35% of the students lived with host family in the 60s, it declined until 2000s to 5%.
The number of students accomodating with their own family also declined from 15% in the 1960s, to 5% in the 80s, where it stayed constant for the next decade. Despite this trend, in the 2000s the percentage of students living in their family’s home increased upto 13%.
