Overall, the amount of gas in the UK followed an upward trend, while the reverse was true for that of oil and coal. It is also noticeable that, despite lower figures in the initial years, gas took the lead in the end, overtaking coal, which was the dominant fossil fuel at the start.
Focusing on the amount of gas first, this figure experienced a growth in numbers. Starting the period with about 250 million tons, the amount of gas increased sharply to roughly 260 million in 1995. Over the next years, the figure for gas continued to rise gradually, reaching almost 350 million tons, which is the highest figure in the chart.
When it comes to fossil fuels, which showed a decline, oil and coal decreased over the period, albeit at varying degrees. Beginning the period at just above 300 million tons, the amount of coal dropped significantly over the rest of the period, leveling off at about 190 million by the end of the period. Oil, on the other hand, followed the same pattern. In 1990, the figure for oil was almost 275 million tons, a figure that then declined to 240 million in 1995. Although showing a marginal increase to 250 million in 2000, the amount of oil went down over the last decade, ending the period with 200 million tons.
