The graph shows information about the number of marriages in the UK between 1951 and 2001.
Overall, it can be seen that there was a considerable downward trend in the number of first marriages while all marriages saw a slight decline and remarriages passed a slim increase from 1951 to 2001 in the UK.
Looking at the details, in 1951, couples who were remarried were approximately 150,000, then in the next 30 years, the number of remarriages remained almost unchanged. Although, between 1991 and 2001 , their number reached approximately 200,000 with a noticeable rise.
By contrast, the figures of all marriages and first marriages went in the opposite direction. Firstly, all marriages were about 400,000 in the beginning of 1951, and after that, until 1971, their number reached 450,000 with the highest number in the graph. But it ended at about 370,000 with a significant decrease in 2001. On the other hand, first marriages started the period with about 350,000. Until 1981, any dramatic rises and falls were not seen. Although, until the end of 2001, the number of first marriages fell to 250,000 significantly.
