The charts illustrate the average retirement age of males and females in six different countries in 2004 and 2008.
Overall, there was a slight upward trend in retirement age across most countries. Men generally retired later than women, and Sweden had the highest retirement ages in both years, while France had the lowest.
In 2004, men retired at about 58 in France and 63 in Sweden. By 2008, these figures increased slightly, with Sweden reaching 64 and the Netherlands rising to around 63. Denmark and the UK also showed moderate increases.
For women, retirement ages were lower but followed a similar trend. France remained unchanged at approximately 58. Denmark showed a noticeable increase from 59 to 61. Sweden again recorded the highest figures, rising from 63 to 64. Other countries experienced only small changes over the period.
