Overall, in both years, even though more drama movies were released, ticket sales were higher for comedy movies.
In terms of films released, the percentage of drama movies was higher than all other genres in both years. From 26% in 1996, the count increased to 35% in 2006. Following drama movies, comedy and fantasy movies were in second and third positions, respectively. While the percentage of comedy movies saw a growth of 5%, the percentage of fantasy movies increased by 4%. However, the percentage of romantic movies remained the same at 6%.
With respect to ticket sales, comedy movies dominated other genres. Ticket sales for comedy films went up to 23% from 20%. Meanwhile, ticket sales for drama increased by one percentage point, and fantasy movies saw considerable growth from 3% to 7%. Ticket sales of romantic movies witnessed the opposite trend, which decreased from 5% in 1996 to 2% in 2006.
