The diagram illustrates the process of constructing an igloo snow from compacted snow. Overall, the construction process consists of five main steps, beginning with cutting blocks of snow from the ground to ending with building an entrance into the igloo.
Initially, an area with compacted snow is chosen, and a snow saw is used to cut the snow into rectangular blocks. The ideal dimensions of each block are 15 inches by 3 inches by 6 inches. These blocks are first positioned at the base, with large ones providing stability. They are then arranged in a circular pattern, gradually stacked upward to form a dome-shape structure. During this stage, the edge of the blocks are smoothed so that they fit tightly together, while a hole is also dug under the wall to form an entrance.
Once a dome has been completed, loose snow is shoveled onto the igloo and packed into all crevices to prevent exposure to the cold. The interior is smoothed by hand, and any remaining snow is removed. Finally, a hole is dug beneath the wall to create the desired entrance, which is then covered with snow blocks.
