The chart illustrates the proportion of car owners in four different countries between 2000 and 2020.
Overall, there was an increase in the share of people owning a car in all four countries examined, with the most dramatic rise being seen in the figures for India. In addition, Canada was generally the highest rate of car ownership among the four countries, but it was surpassed by Australia in the last year of the period.
Looking first at the share of households that owned a car in Australia and Canada, the former commenced the period with around 65%, which was 5% lower than the corresponding figure for the latter, which stood at nearly 70%. Thereafter, there was a significant increase in the car ownership rate in Australia, reaching about 85% in the final year. Similarly, the data for Canada rose from around 70% at the beginning of the period to nearly 78% in 2015, when it surpassed by Australia, before ending up at 82% at the end of the period.
Turning to the remaining nations, the disparity between Brazil and India in the share of residents who are car owers narrowed over time. In particular, 40% of people owned a car in Brazil in 2000, with a moderate rise to 58% and a final growth to 65% in 2020. As for India, the figure saw similar changes, reaching 50% in 2015 and ending up at the same rate as Brazil in the final year.
