The line graph compares the proportion of old population from 1940 to 2040 in three countries, namely Japan, Sweden, and the USA.
Overall, it is clear that the percentage of people in the 65 and over group experiences an upward trend. Noticeably, Japan is expected to be the most dramatic increase in this proportion out of three countries.
Specifically, in 1940, elderly population percentages in the USA were the highest, at nearly 10%, whereas those in Sweden were 7% and Japan were only 5%. Over the following 40 years, the older population in both Sweden and the USA rose by around 12%. By contrast, Japan remained below 5% at that time.
However, after coming back to the initial proportion in 2020, the figures for Japanese elderly people are predicted to peak at approximately 27% by 2040. Until 2040, the percentage of people aged 65 and over in the USA will account for about 23%, and 25% of the old in Sweden might be expected.
