The line graph shows the percentage of mobile phone sales by three companies – Motorola, Nokia and Sony Ericsson – from 1994 to 2004.
Overall, market share of Motorola was initially the highest but then it decreased over the period. The proportion of Nokia’s sales was relatively more stable at the beginning of the period and there was dramatic increase in its market share, becoming dominant at the end of the period. In contrast, the proportion of Sony Ericsson’s sales was the lowest throughout the period.
Motorola’s market share exhibited a downward trend overall. The company started the period with nearly 32% and this was followed by a considerable drop to approximately 15% in 2000. After declining, a minimal rise was seen in Motorola’s sales to about 17% in 2004. By contrast, Nokia showed an upward trend for most of the period. There was a slight rise to almost 23% in 1995, before dipping to nearly 20% in 1997. Manufacturer’s market share climbed consistently, reaching a peak at 37% in 2002. Although the proportion of Nokia’s sale dropped to almost 30% at the end of the period, it maintained its dominance in the market.
Sony Ericsson’s market share showed relatively smaller numbers. Despite declining to about 9%, sales increased gradually to 15% in 1998. Even though the figure for Sony Ericsson dropped steadily to almost 5% in 2003, there was a recovery to nearly 10% at the end of the period.
