Firstly, the average time young adults spent watching TV or streaming fluctuated over a 30-year period, falling from 18 hours in 1990 to 14 hours in 2010 before rising sharply to 20 hours in 2020. Meanwhile, the average time spent reading declined gradually from 4 hours per week in 1990 to 2 hours per week in 2020.
Regarding TV viewing or streaming among older adults, the average weekly time rose steadily from 22 hours in 1990 to 25 hours in 2020. By comparison, the amount of time spent exercising or playing sports, reading and socializing was lower than the amount of time spent watching TV or streaming. Moreover, the average time spent exercising or playing sports increased gradually from 1 hour per week in 1990 to 3 hours per week in 2020.
