The graph compares the percentages of people in Singapore that have four different items – air conditioning, washing mashine, car, and computer – from 1973 to 2008.
Overall, the fugure for all the goods’ owners saw a drastic increase, except for air conditioning, that the change was lower than others experienced. Although, at the beginning, the figure for air conditioning owners was the highest, the lowest share of Singapore people owned this item by the end of the period. Instead, washing machines and cars dominated in the last year. Notably, the proportions of people had these items were the same in both the first and the last year, although during the period, the figure for washing mashines’ owners consistently higher.
As for the washing mashine and car users, the items that were used by almost all population by 2008, the percentages of people possessed these were accounted for only 10%. During the following 10 years, the figure for the former surged to 70% and continued gradually increasing, reached 90%. The latter, likewise, increased constantly and made up 90%.
Focusing on the remaining two products, their patterns were a bit different. In 1973, 20% of people had air conditioning, the figure that slowly climbed to 50 % later. Computers, however, unlike other objects, started to be used after 1988, and in this year, a percentage of its owners was even lower than 10%. Despite this, the figure for users rose dramatically by 70%.
