The line graph illustrates the proportion of the expenditure in Turkey, over the 40-year period from 1960 to 2000.
Overall, there were downward trend for Food, Leisure, Transport and Energy, whereas Clothing was the only upward trend over this period. In addition, Food was ranked first at the start of the period, then experienced a dramatic fell.
Initially, the expenditure on Food was the highest at the beginning, stood at 35% in 1960. Over following years, this figure dropped significantly, reaching 15% by 2000. By comparison, Energy was the smallest the expanditure in Turkey throughout the period, falling steadily from 5% in 1960 to almost 1% in 2000. Meanwhile, Clothing was the only category which was ranked first by the final year, rising steadily from 9% in 1960 to 17% in 2000.
As for the remaining categories, leisure accounted for 20% of spending in 1960, making it the second largest category. However, this figure declined gradually to 12% by 2000, and it was overtaken by clothing in the 1980s. Similarly, the proportion spent on transport fell slightly from 10% to 7% between 1960 and 1990, before dropping sharply to just 3% in 2000.
