Overall, the number of kilometers travelled in Germany witnessed a downward trend, while those for other countries underwent fluctuations. Among these countries, the US recorded the highest number of kilometers travelled throughout the entire period.
At the start of the period, the US took the leading position, with nearly 1700 km travelled by car. It was followed by Germany an Britain, as its figures being 1600km and 1300km, respectively. The two last positions belonged to France and Japan, with 1000km and 700km travelled, in turn.
Afterwards, despite occasional fluctuations, the average distances recorded in the US and Britain increased to 1800 km and just over 1400 km, respectively, by the end of the period, maintaining their leading positions. Conversely, the figures for Germany and France stabilized for about 15 initial years, before dropping significantly to around 1350 km and 900 km, in turn. Meanwhile, Japan’s average distance fluctuated with a downward trend, reaching a bottom of roughly 350 km in 2002, ending the period with 400 km.
