In 1970, the number of car theft was 0.4 million, twice as high as that of house burglary, at 0.2 million. The former crime category experienced a substantial rise to peak of 1.6 million in 1995 – the highest figure, before falling to around 1 million by 2005. Meanwhile, although the latter crime category rose moderately to about 0.7 million in 1995, it dropped to almost 0.5 million in the final year.
Street robbery, by contrast, rose marginally over the period. In 1970, the number of street robbery stood at nearly 0.1 million, a figure that then increased to 0.2 by 2005.
