The maps show how the city of Nelson has changed over time comparing its layout in the year 2000 to the present day.Overall, the city centre has undergone major changes with several new facilities especially in transportation, shopping and entertainment.
In 2000, Nelson had a simple layout with a train station to the west of the city centre, an old market and a university situated in the north. The port was located in the south with a road parallel to it. The area appeared less developed as there were not many public facilities.
Today, Nelson has become more urban and modern. The train station has been rebuilt closer to the university and a hall of residence has been added nearby. Additionally, a bike rental scheme has been introduced around the city centre which is now for pedestrians only promoting eco-friendly transport. To the east of the university, a new shopping centre has been built and the old market has been replaced by a covered one. South of the city centre, a new shop, restaurant and several bars and clubs have been established near the port making the area more attractive destination for visitors.
In summary, Nelson has developed from basic layout into more urbanised and modern city focusing on the improvement of public transport, shopping and leisure facilities.
