The maps illustrate how a beachfront area in Australia changed between 1950 and the present day.
Overall, the area has become much more developed. The main changes include the addition of new car parks and surfing facilities, while the children’s playground was completely removed to make space for this development.
Looking at the area behind the beach, in 1950, a road from the city ended at a car park on the right side. Today, this road has been extended and now goes south along the coast. On the left side of the grass area, there used to be a playground for children. However, this has been replaced by a second, large car park. The pavilion and the picnic tables in the middle are the only things that have stayed exactly the same.
Regarding the beach and water facilities, in 1950, there were two 25-metre pools on both sides of the beach. Today, the pool on the left side is much bigger, as it was changed into a 50-metre pool. Next to it, a new restaurant and a surf club have been built. On the right side, the 25-metre pool and the lighthouse are still there, but a second surf club has been added right next to the pool.
