The maps illustrate the changes that have taken place in a town centre between 1990 and the present day.

Overall, the town centre has undergone a significant commercialization, primarily characterized by the construction of a shopping mall and several apartment blocks. In addition, pedestrian facilities have been introduced, while some small shops and a bank have been replaced.

Looking at the northern part of the town centre, the row of small retail outlets comprising a newsagent’s, a grocer’s, a baker’s and a butcher’s was removed and replaced by a large shopping mall. By contrast, the children’s centre located nearby remained unchanged throughout the period. On the eastern side, one of the two banks was demolished to make way for a café, whereas the other bank was retained.

Regarding the central and southern areas, the park, library and town hall remained in their original positions. However, major changes occurred along Green Street. The row of houses that previously occupied the southern side of the town centre was replaced by several apartment blocks. Another apartment building was also constructed in the south-eastern corner. Furthermore, pedestrian crossings and walking areas were added around Oldfield Street, making the area more pedestrian-friendly than before.
