The two maps show the transformation of a part of the Shalton village from 1910 to 2010.
Overall, the village became significantly more modernized and residential, with major changes made to its general layout. This transformation included the introduction of supermarket, parking area, bank, cafe and new houses. However, some elements such as school, post office and several houses remained largely the same throughout the period.
In 1910, the village had more green spaces and less houses than in 2010. On the top right side of the village was a Post office, while a small house was located on the left. The centre of the village was occupied by a Large house surrounded by trees. Below the trees, there were a Grocer and Baker, and a house between them. Two houses were situated in the southern part of High Street and a Butcher and School were located along the School Road.
By 2010, the village’s layout has changed considerably. Although the Post Office remained in the same place, there were five more newly constructed houses to the east of London Road. In the middle part, the large house and trees were removed to make room for new residential housing and a road, which connects the High Street and London Street. The Baker and house were demolished, while the Grocer was replaced by a new Cafe and three additional housing units were added on the other side of London Street. Finally, whereas school experienced no change, a new Bank was constructed in place of the old house in far north and, noticeably, the Butcher was displaced by a huge supermarket and parking area.
