The maps illustrate how a zoo layout was transformed over time, from 1960 to the present day.
Overall, the zoo has undergone substantial modernization, becoming more accessible over time. These changes were mainly achieved through the improvement of its transportation infrastructure, as well as significant changes to the animal closures.
Initially, the zoo was bordered by a harbour to the north. The eastern section consisted of a picnic area adjacent to the seal show. Enclosures for birds and chimpanzees were located in the center of the zoo, near the gift shop. Conversely, the western part of the zoo was designated to house African and Australian animals.
In the present day, access has been diversified with the addition of a ferry and a new entrance situated in the south-west of the zoo. A cable car system now links this entrance directly to the picnic area, and the gift shop has been expanded considerably. In terms of animal areas, a new section of wild animals has been introduced, while the African animals enclosure is now being moved next to the seal show. However, the Australian animals sector, the seal show, and the picnic area have remained unchanged.
