Overall, the number of people who were affected by traffic noise was significantly higher in both cities and rural areas among all categories. By contrast, those affected by industry noise had the lowest figure in cities, while no people in rural areas were affected by it. Furthermore, noise from aircraft and trains also had markedly lower figures compared to traffic noise.
In 2007, 68 million people were affected by traffic noise in cities during the day, which was 20 million people more than the figure for the night time. However, the number of people who suffered from traffic noise in rural areas was noticeably lower than in cities, at 35 million during the day and 24 million during the night time. Meanwhile, 10 million people in cities were affected by train noise during the day, which was 2 million more than in rural areas. During the night time, the figure stood at 8 million in cities and 6 million in rural areas.
By contrast, people who were affected by aircraft noise had the same figures in both cities and rural areas during the night time, at 1 million. During the day, it was 4 million in cities and 2 million in rural areas. In comparison, no people suffered from industrial noise in rural areas. 1 million people were affected by industrial noise during the day, while 0.25 million were affected during the night time, affected by the industry noise.
