Overall, in 1950 the majority of family’s budget belonged to housing while in 2010 it was more equally distributed among different categories.
In 1950, above 72 percent of money went to housing and by reaching 22 percent in 2010, there was more left for food which saw more than 20 percent increase in 60 years. Although transportation costs went significantly higher in 2010, reaching 14 percent, the huge reduction in housing expenses, still left enough space for a growth of nearly 15 percent points in other expenses.
In contrast, education and healthcare expenditures didn’t experience substantial augmentations, with educational costs maintaining almost the same proportion of the total family budget and healthcare expenses, although doubled, but only growing by two percent points.
