The pie charts provide information about the sales rates of five types of books by a bookseller from 1972 to 2012. Overall, while the figures for adult fiction and children’s fiction experienced an upward trend, with the former being the largest at the end, the reverse was true for biography, travel, and other kinds of books.
Focusing on the larger figures first, the proportion of adult fiction books sold by a book retailer started at 20% in 1972, a figure that then increased moderately to 25% in 1992, and this was followed by a considerable rise to 45%, making it the largest figure of all by 2012. Similarly, starting at 20% in 1972, there was a slight increase in the percentage of children’s books sold by a bookseller to 25% in the span of 40 years.
In contrast, a moderate drop was observed in the proportion of biography books sold by a bookseller from 20% to 8% over a 40-year period. Meanwhile, the figure for travel books sold by a book retailer rose slightly to 18% from 15% between 1972 and 1992 and this was followed by decreasing moderately to 10% in the span of 20 years. Similarly to biography books, the percentage of other kinds of books sold by a bookseller started at 25% in 1972, making it the largest figure in this period, a figure that then fell slightly to 20% in 1992 and then declined noticeably to 12% by 2012.
