Overall, food was the highest category of spending in 1971; however, computers were least during the same year, while cars had the highest percentage of spending in 2001.

In 1971, the amount of spent on food was 44%, which decreased to 30% in 2001. Similarly, spending on books fell down from 6% in 1971 to 1% in 2001, and spending on petrol fell from 10% in 1971 to 8% in 2001. Furthermore, spending onfurniture remained stable at just below one-tenth of a percentage.

On the other hand, theamount spent on computers increased sixfold, from only 2% in 1971. Moreover, spending on restaurants rose from 7% to 14% over the period. In addition, spending on cars was 22% in 1971, which went nearly doubled in 2001, which was the highest category in term of spending.
