The two pie charts illustrate the percentages of time spent on six types of mobile media and entertainment in China in March 2016 and March 2018.
Overall, the most striking feature is that social networking accounted for the largest share of users’ time in both years, although its percentage declined considerably. In contrast, video experienced the most significant increase, while gaming remained unchanged. Furthermore, the total time spent on mobile media and entertainment rose from 2.0 billion hours to 3.2 billion hours.
To begin with, social networking represented 60% of total entertainment time in March 2016, making it by far the most popular category. However, this figure fell significantly to 47% in March 2018. In contrast, the percentage of time devoted to video increased markedly from 13% to 22%, making it the second-largest category in the latter year. Meanwhile, gaming accounted for 13% in both years, showing no change over the period.
Regarding the remaining categories, the share of news increased from 7% in 2016 to 11% in 2018. By comparison, audio remained stable at 4%, while reading recorded the smallest proportion in both years, at just 3%. Thus, although social networking continued to dominate mobile entertainment, video and news gained a larger share of users’ time by March 2018.
