The illustration compares information for the world’s large and small fishing fields.
Overall, the large companies employ far fewer workers than small ones. Moreover, large sectors are able to supply their fish to industrial processing, while small-scale sectors cannot. There are also noticeable differences in workers’ salaries and annual fuel comsumption.
According to the table, large industries hire about 500,000 employees whereas small businesses hire approximately 12 million employees. In terms of annual catches, large-scale fields annually catch 29 million tonnes of fish for food and roughly 22 million tonnes for industrial processing. On the other hand, the small-scale sectors annually catch 24 million tonnes, which is slightly lower, and none of their catch is used for industrial processing.
For the annual salaries, it is between 30,000 and 300,000 dollars for employees in large-scale fields meanwhile it is only between 250 and 2500 dollars for workers in small-scale fields. In contrast, the large ships use between 14 and 19 million tonnes of oil annually, whereas small boats consume a much smaller amount.
