Overall, except for Chinese which has the largest native-speaking population, English dominates in both the number of learners and the total number of countries where it is spoken. Whereas most listed languages have significantly more native speakers than students, English stands out as the only one where the number of people learning the language far exceeds its native speakers.
In terms of English, it is the most widely learning language with 1.5 billion learners, nearly triple its native speakers at 527 million. Furthermore, English is spoken in 101 countries, the highest among the list. In contrast, Chinese has the largest number of native speakers at 1.39 billion. However, people learning Chinese are only reach to 30 million. In addition, Chinese is spoken in much fewer countries than English, with a total of 33.
Regarding the other languages, French is the second widespread language, within 51 countries using it. Although the number of learners, 82 million, is less than its 118 million native speakers. Spanish follows the similar pattern, but with larger number of native speakers, despite having only 14.5 million learners. Finally, Italian and Japaneses both have smaller scale among all categories. Italian has only 67 million native speakers, and 8 million learner, while Japanese has 123 million native speakers but only has 3 million learners.
