The data offers an information regarding several of the global’s most popular language to learn. Overall, the table compares six major global languages based on learner numbers, native speaker populations, and geographical distribution.
English is by far the most studied language, with 1,5 billioon learners nearly 20 times the number of people learning Frech (82 million), which holds the second spot. In contrast, Japanese has the fewest learners at 3 million. English and French are the only languages where the number of learners approaches or exceeds the number of native speakers. In fact, English learners outnumber native speakers by nearly 3 to 1.
Chinese shows the opposite trend; despite having the most native speakers (1.39 billion), it has a relatively small learner base of 30 million. There is a clear correlation between the number of learners and the number of countries where the language is spoken. English is spoken in 101 countries, followed by French (51). Languages with more localized native populations, such as Japanese (25 countries) and Italian (29 countries), tend to have the lowest number of global learners.
