Overall, the total number of people ingaged in sports grew for the given cohort. But while for some sports such as baseball, basketball, softball, and swimming the number of participants diminished, others retained their values or enjoyed growth (such as hiking, running, and yoga).
In more detail, the total number of people doing sports grew by 1 million within four years from 79.3 to 80.3 million.
Sports that grew the most new audiences include running and yoga, both of which gained 3 millions, reaching 18 and 12 million, respectively. Hiking showed a more modest increase of 2 milllion (from 12 to 14).
Other sports lost some of their popularity. Buth while weightlifting dropped by just 0.2 million participants, baseball shrunk by almost a third (from 3.8 to 2.2). For softball, swimming, and basketball losses vary between 1.2 and 2.5 million.
