Overall, the USA and New Zealand were the most popular destinations throughout the period, whereas Germany and Japan attracted the fewest students. In general, the number of Australian students increased in most countries, while Germany remained stable over the three years.
In 2004, New Zealand had the highest number of Australian students, at approximately 2,100, followed by the USA with around 1,900 students. During the following two years, both countries experienced a steady increase. The figure for the USA rose considerably to about 2,500 in 2006, becoming the most popular destination by the end of the period. Meanwhile, the number of students studying in New Zealand also increased gradually, reaching just over 2,400 in 2006. Despite this growth, it remained slightly lower than the figure for the USA.
As for the remaining destinations, the UK ranked third throughout the period. The number of Australian students studying there increased steadily from around 1,100 in 2004 to approximately 1,200 in 2005, before reaching about 1,600 in 2006, which was the largest increase among these three countries. By contrast, Germany showed no change, with the figure remaining constant at roughly 200 students in all three years. Japan had the lowest number of students in both 2004 and 2005, at only around 100. However, this figure doubled to approximately 200 in 2006, making it equal to Germany in the final year.
