The illustration presents data about the usual spending on household items, shown in percentages in a city in China from 1990 and 2005.
Overall, there are eight categories of household items given, namely food, clothing, household appliances, medical services, transport and communications, recreation, education and culture, accommodation, and others. Additionally, according to the data from both years, food has the highest percentage amongst other categories.
During the years 1990 and 2005, the main cause of spending was food, which accounted a 56% and 43% respectively. Similarly, it is then followed by recreation, education and cultural use with 12% in 1990 and 15% in 2005.
However, in 1990, the lowest percentage accounted for was around 1% for medical services. On the contrary, in 2005, many of the categories got a 6% like clothing, medical needs, and others. This shows that in those years, there was a shift in spending because people had different needs.
