The table illustrates the percentage of income that two age groups in the UK spent on four types of everyday goods in 1998.
Overall, food accounted for the largest share for adults while music was the most common thing to spend their money on among children. Children spent most of their income on these products while adults spent less than half.
Adults spent one quarter of their income on food, which is considerably higher than the rest of products. Food accounted for almost 40 percent among women but only 14 percent among men. Males spent 10 percent of their income on electronic equipment whereas females spent only 1 percent. Music and videos were not particularly common and accounted for 5 and 1 to 2 percent respactively.
Children spent two fifths of their money on music that made it the most popular choice among youngsters. Besides the electronic equipment both girls and boys shared roughly the same portion of their income on food, music and videos. They accounted for 9 to 11, 38 to 40 and 18 to 17 percent respectively. Boys spent almost one fifth of their money on electronic equipment whereas girls spent only 5 percent.
