The tables compare net electricity generation by different energy sources and the number of power plants in 2005 and 2015.
Overall, coal was the main source of electricity in 2005, but natural gas became the leading source in 2015. In addition, the number of coal power plants decreased, while gas and hydroelectric plants showed slight changes.
In 2005, coal produced the highest amount of electricity at about 2,012,873 thousand megawatt hours. However, this figure fell significantly to 1,352,398 in 2015. In contrast, electricity generation from natural gas increased sharply from 760,960 to 1,333,482, making it the largest source in 2015. Nuclear power showed a small rise from 781,986 to 797,178. Meanwhile, petroleum and hydroelectric power both experienced slight declines over the period.
Looking at the number of power plants, coal plants decreased from 619 to 427. Petroleum plants also dropped slightly from 1,133 to 1,082. On the other hand, natural gas plants increased from 1,664 to 1,779. Nuclear plants fell a little from 66 to 62, while hydroelectric plants rose slightly from 1,422 to 1,440.
In summary, electricity production shifted from coal to natural gas between 2005 and 2015, while the number of plants changed only moderately.
