The tables illustrate the number of international students that study in Canada and The United States by country of origin.
In 2002, a total of 59,870 students studied in canada. This includes 5400 Chinese students , 5000 from the United States and 2100 from India. The United States seemed to be a more popular destination amongst students, hosting nearly 10 times more students, with the grand total being 581,600 in 2002.
There was a 17% increase overall in the total students enrolled in universities in canada between 2002 and 2003. The number had gone up to 70,004 in just a year. The strength of Chinese students nearly doubled by 2003.
However, the United States did not exhibit similar signs of exponential growth. The total population of students only increased by 2% over the year. They also witnessed a significant decline in the number of indian students who enrolled in universities in the US in 2003. The number had dropped from 200,000 in 2002 to 182,000 in 2003, showing a 9% decrease.
All in all, there is a stark difference between the strength of students studying in the US in comparison to Canada.
