Overall, Indian students represented the largest group among international students in the US, while in Canada, Chinese students accounted for the highest number. Despite a general increase in international student numbers in both countries, the number of Indian students studying in the US experienced a decline. In addition, the total number of international students in the US and Canada experienced an increasing trend.
In Canada, Chinese students made up the largest number of foreign students, with 5,400 recorded in 2002. They were followed by students from the US and India, numbering 5,000 and 2,100 respectively. Afterward, the number of Chinese students rose sharply, increasing to 7,850 in 2003, maintaining their leading position. Similarly, the figures for American and Indian students studying in Canada grew to 5,450 and 2,835 respectively, contributing to a 17% overall increase in the total number of international students.
In contrast, in the United States, Indian students represented the largest group, standing at 200,000 in 2002. However, their number declined by 9% to 182,000 in 2003, although they continued to form the largest cohort.
