The temperature in Darwin constantly rises from January and reaches its peak in August before a gradual decline until 21 degrees Celsius in December. By contrast, Melbourne has a moderate climate, with its coldest month in January at 6 degrees Celsius, and the highest temperature in July at 18 degrees Celsius. Melbourne also undergoes a similar change in temperature as seen in Darwin. Its temperature climbs gradually from January and peaks in July, followed by a decline until December, reaching 8 degrees Celsius.
The average hours of sunshine are correlated with the temperature in the two cities. In Darwin, the amount of sunshine time steadily increases from 6 hours in January to 11 hours in June. Sunshine time then remains the same in the following three months before dropping to 8 hours in December. In contrast, the sunshine hours in Melbourne decline from 10 hours in January to 6 hours in May. They level off during May and September, and after that, it grows back to 10 hours in December.
