Overall, Melbourne is consistently cooler but receives slightly more sunshine at the beginning and end of the year. In contrast, Darwin records much higher temperatures and experiences its highest sunshine levels in the middle of the year. Both variables follow a clear seasonal pattern.
In terms of temperature, Melbourne starts the year at around 6°C, compared to Darwin’s much warmer 18°C. Temperatures in both cities rise steadily, with Darwin reaching a peak of 30°C in July, while Melbourne’s highest point is about 15°C in the same period. From August onward, temperatures fall in both locations, ending the year at roughly 21°C in Darwin and just under 9°C in Melbourne.
Looking at sunshine hours, Melbourne begins with about 10 hours per day, four hours more than Darwin. The figures become equal at around 8 hours in March, after which Darwin overtakes Melbourne. Between June and September, Darwin experiences its highest and most stable sunshine level at approximately 11 hours daily, while Melbourne remains unchanged at around 6 hours. From September to December, Darwin’s sunshine gradually decreases to 8 hours, whereas Melbourne’s increases again to about 10 hours.
