Overall, the price of bananas in Japan tended to fluctuate wildly compared to other countries during the period. In addition, Japan had the highest prices of bananas, while from those the USA was the lowest.
Looking at the chart in more detail, in 1996, one kilogram of bananas in Japan were sold for 2 dollars, which was at a similar price in France. In the subsequent years, the figures for Japan continuously fluctuated before hitting a bottom at 1.5 dollars/kg in 2003 and then dropped to 2.5 dollars in the final year. In contrast, France’s cost had been unstable from 1998 to 2003 after that, it bounced back to 2 dollars.
As for the remaining countries, the banana price in the first year(1996) in Germany was 0.5 dollars higher than the figures for the USA, at 1.5 dollars and 2 dollars respectively. Thereafter, Germany’s price fluctuated around 1.4 dollars in 1999 and then it increased and reached a peak of nearly 2 dollars per kilogram, before falling back to 1.7 dollars. On the other hand, the cost in the USA has been a slight increase in 1998 and relatively stable in later years.
