Overall, the birth rates in both countries declined over the 80-year period. The two trends are quite similar in terms of their overall decline. In most years, although there was an overall decline in both China and the US over the period, in most years, the birth rates of the US are higher than that of China.
At the beginning of the period, the figure for the US stood at approximately 10%. Over the period from 1920 to 1935, the birth rates of the US fluctuated; however, the figure remained above 10%. Over the next decade, the birth rates of the US dropped dramatically under 5%. In the 1950s, the figure of the USA increased significantly to 15%, this is the highest level of the USA over the period 80 years. In the next of the period, the birth rates in the US declined gradually. In 2000, the birth rates decreased to 7%.
During the same period, the birth rates in China fluctuated consideranly rather than the US. The rates in China experienced a significant decline, falling to 5% from 1940-1945. Then, the figure reached a peak of 20% in 1950. By contrast, 5 years later, the birth rates of China fell sharply to under 10%. Between 1955-1985, the figure dropped substantially and decreased to 2% in 2000.
