Band 5+: You saw an advertisement for a volunteer position at a local community center that helps elderly people with technology. Write a letter to the center coordinator applying for the role. You should include details about: - why you want to volunteer for this specific organization - what skills or experience you have that would be helpful - your availability during the week.

The letter addresses all three bullet points required by the task. However, the response is somewhat narrow in scope. While you mention various physical skills, the connection to 'organizing sports activities for children' is not fully developed. Some of the listed skills (like cleaning roads or transferring sand) are irrelevant to the specific role described in the prompt. To improve, try to tailor your experience more closely to the context of the job - for example, by focusing on coaching, teamwork, or child supervision. Additionally, ensure the tone is appropriate for a formal application; addressing the 'Center Manager' rather than 'volunteer team' would be more professional. The letter falls short of the required 150 words.

The letter follows a logical progression, addressing all parts of the prompt. However, the transitions between ideas are somewhat abrupt. To improve, use more sophisticated cohesive devices to link your personal motivations with your skills. For example, instead of starting new sentences with 'I', try using subordinating conjunctions like 'Since I find great fulfillment in helping others, I am eager to...' to create a smoother flow.

The vocabulary used is clear and accurate, but it is quite basic and repetitive (e.g., the frequent use of 'I can', 'I have', and 'skills'). To reach a higher band, aim for more precise and varied vocabulary. Instead of 'I am very happy to see your advertisement,' you could use 'I am writing to express my enthusiastic interest in the volunteer position advertised.' Instead of 'hard work,' consider terms like 'physically demanding tasks' or 'labor-intensive activities.'

The grammar is generally accurate, and the meaning is always clear. However, the sentence structures are predominantly simple sentences. To improve your score, incorporate more complex sentence structures, such as relative clauses (e.g., 'Having previously volunteered in Ulaanbaatar, I have developed...') and conditional sentences. This will demonstrate a higher level of grammatical control.
