The pie charts compare the proportions of people using five modes of transport to commute to a university in 2004 and 2009. Percentages are shown for each category.
Overall, car usage declined considerably, while bus travel became the most popular mode. Cycling and walking saw modest increases, whereas train travel remained the least common in both years.
In 2004, over half of commuters (51%) travelled by car, followed by buses at 33%. Bicycles accounted for 9% of journeys, while walking and train use were relatively minor, at 4% and 3% respectively.
By 2009, the proportion travelling by bus had risen sharply to 46%, overtaking cars, which dropped to 28%. Bicycle use almost doubled to 16%, walking rose slightly to 6%, and train travel increased marginally to 4%. These changes may have been influenced by the introduction of parking charges in 2006 and the addition of a new bus stop in 2008.
