Some people argue that some professional workers as doctors, nurses and teachers build a strong contribution to society, as they should be paid more than athletes and celebrities. From my perspective, I partly agree with this view, although I acknowledge that the reasons why sports and entertainment personalities often paid more.
On the one hand, professional workers make an indispensable contribution to society by ensuring its long-term stability and development. Take medical study as an example, doctors and nurses are people who defend people’s health and life. When we have more doctors and nurses in hospitals, they will not have to wait for a long time if we are in emergency as they save our lives and treat diseases. People in medical study should be paid well because they have to work in the high pressure workforce, which directly related to human life and required many years of training and deep professional qualifications. Moreover, teachers play an important role to educate future generations and develop critical thinking, even practical skills. The education quality is the key determinant to decide labor productivity and long-term socio-economic development.
On the other hand, sports and entertainment personalities often earn much higher incomes due to market demand rather than social contribution. Famous athletes and celebrities apply demands of citizens as they not only attract millions of viewers to generate advertising and sponsorship revenue but also boost industries such as tourism and media. By doing that, they can both bring entertainment to public and enhance national awareness. In details, their salaries depend on variety of sources such as popularity, commercial success and public demand. If they do not attract many audiences, their salaries will decrease immediately. As a result, entertainment mainly provides leisure and temporary enjoyment while professional workers directly improve quality of life and support sustainable development.
In conclusion, although entertainment and sports bring remarkable economic, I believe doctors, nurses and teachers should be paid more than athletes and celebrities because of their essential role for social welfare.
