Obtaining safe water is considered as a fundamental human right and it is commonly believed that the availability of water should be free in every residence. However, I disagree with this idea.
Every household should pay a minimal charge fee to provide wide access to clean water. This means that local water districts need more funds to purchase filters, treatment equipments equipment, and even fix aging infrastructure in order to treat and ensure good quality of water among users. Water from different sources such as river, lakes, and dams is not quite always safe to utilize because they often contain dirt, sediments and other contaminants that can pollute water. As a result, using proper tools and machineries promotes safer water and reduces the risk of developing health-related issues.Although water is considered a renewable resource, an additional fee should be imposed to prevent overconsumption. This is mainly because such charges encourage people to use water more responsibly according to their needs, which allows them to monitor their consumption and avoid unnecessary waste. For example, residents may tend to reduce activities such as overwatering gardens, washing cars frequently and leaving taps running for long periods, which leads to the loss of large volumes of water every day. Consequently, by conserving water resources today, future generations will have enough access to sufficient supply, which reduces the risk of water scarcity and drough.
In conclusion, while everyone should have access to clean water, I disagree that it should be provided completely free of charge to every household. Charging a reasonable fee should help maintain water services and encourage people to conserve water.
