Band 9: Access to clean water is a basic human right. Therefore every home should have a water supply that is provided free of charge. Do you agree or disagree?

Note: Both the topic and the essay were created by one of our users.

These days, many argue that clean water should be provided free of charge to every household as a fundamental human right. However, I strongly disagree with this view, as it fails to consider the significant financial burdens on governments and the environmental consequences of unrestricted water usage. This essay will examine the economic challenges and environmental risks associated with providing free clean water, highlighting why this policy is not feasible.

Providing clean water free of charge could place significant financial strain on governments, as they would need to cover the costs of water treatment, distribution, and infrastructure without recouping these expenses from consumers, potentially leading to increased taxation or reallocation of funds from essential services like healthcare and education, thereby disrupting the balanced allocation of public resources.

Secondly, there is a potential environmental impact due to increased water consumption, as free access may lead to higher usage levels, straining water resources and increasing wastewater production. This can result in reduced groundwater levels, depletion of surface water sources, and greater risks of pollution if wastewater is not properly treated, highlighting the need for sustainable water management practices.

In conclusion, I strongly disagree with the idea that every household should have access to free clean water. Providing water at no cost would place a significant financial burden on the government, diverting funds from essential services like education and healthcare. It would also lead to excessive water usage and environmental degradation, as people may not value water as a limited resource. Therefore, while ensuring clean water is important, making it free is not a practical solution and may cause more harm than good.
