Band 9: Access to clean water is a basic human right. Therefore every home should have a water supply that is provided free of charge. Do you agree or disagree?

Note: Both the topic and the essay were created by one of our users.

Access to clean water is undeniably a basic human right, essential for survival, health, and dignity. I strongly agree that every household should be provided with clean water free of charge, as it promotes public health, reduces inequality, and fulfills a fundamental responsibility of governments.

First and foremost, clean water is vital for maintaining basic health and hygiene. People rely on it for drinking, cooking, and sanitation—needs that are non-negotiable regardless of income or status. Without access to safe water, individuals are exposed to numerous preventable diseases, including cholera, typhoid, and hepatitis. For example, regions in sub-Saharan Africa that lack access to clean water see higher rates of child mortality and infectious disease outbreaks. By ensuring free and universal water access, governments can reduce disease burden and enhance the overall well-being of their citizens.

Secondly, making water freely available to all helps reduce socio-economic disparities. Many low-income households struggle to pay for utilities, and in some cases, families must choose between food and water. Introducing free water services, especially for essential daily use, ensures that no one is denied access due to financial hardship. This approach not only supports the most vulnerable but also fosters a fairer and more just society.

Critics may argue that providing free water to every household is economically unsustainable. However, the long-term benefits—such as improved public health, reduced healthcare costs, and a more productive workforce—can outweigh the initial expense. Moreover, governments can regulate usage by offering a basic free amount per household, while charging for excessive consumption to promote conservation.

In conclusion, clean water is a fundamental human necessity, and providing it free of charge to every home is a moral and practical imperative. By doing so, governments fulfill their duty to protect health, uphold human rights, and promote equality.
