Band 9: Advertisements are becoming more and more common in everyday life. Is it a positive or negative development?

Note: Both the topic and the essay were created by one of our users.

Nowadays, encountering adverts on TV has become an indispensable part of our daily lives. While advertising can provide useful information about products, I believe its negative sides are more significant.

On the one hand, advertising can offer certain benefits. Firstly, it serves as a source of valuable information for customers about new products, services, and technological innovations. Through these, people can compare prices, features, and quality, which helps them to make informed decisions quickly by showing key differences. For example, online shopping advertisements often inform customers about discounts and special offers that they might otherwise miss. Secondly, advertising plays a vital role in the development of small businesses. This allows such companies to promote their newly introduced goods to reach enough buyers. By promoting their products, companies can increase sales, expand their consumer base, and compete more effectively in the market. This, in turn, contributes to economic growth and job creation.

However, I believe excessive advertising should be seen as a negative phenomenon. One disadvantage of widespread advertising is that it encourages people to buy things they do not really need. In fact, many advertising campaigns use eye-catching slogans and persuasive images to convince customers that purchasing certain products will improve their lives. As a result, it creates a sense of fake urgency and leads to quick and emotional decisions. Furthermore, exposure to constant adverts is linked to overconsumption. The fashion industry shows this clearly, as it promotes new styles every season, making people throw away usable clothes, which eventually end up in landfills. In this case, such a type of spending not only creates overconsumption but also causes tremendous damage to the environment.

In conclusion, although there are some undeniable benefits of advertising, they are far outweighed by downsides such as overconsumption and unnecessary spending.
