There is a view that advertising needs to be prohibited since it has detrimental impacts on people’s daily lives. Although some media outlets heavily rely on advertisements for their revenue, I do support this statement, as many advertisements are lack of validation and encourage people to compare their possessions and lifestyle with others.
It is evident that many companies mass produced commodity with absence of accountability. As a result, substantial number of people frown upon the product’s quality and an appearance which is not identical to its portrayal. For example, a variety of baby meals and cookies fail to live up to standards. Statistics show that consumers of infant cereal called Alfare rose concerns about the taste and smell of this product. Later this porridge was withdrawn from markets because scientists found a potential toxin risk.Advertising not only shapes consumer preferences regarding groceries but also raises concerns about the quality and durability of clothing products. A clear illustration of this are online shops, which attracts million of consumers by colorful advertisements of clothing. Many individuals, mostly women tend to buy without hesitation, however the product they order don’t come up to their expectations.
Advertising often illustrates individuals enjoying in luxury hotels, expensive possessions and perfect lifestyle. By repeatedly watching these advertisements lavish goods appear as a symbol of success. Ultimately, this leads to comparison and creates a sense of dissatisfaction with their own lives among ordinary consumers. For instance, young generation make materialistic goals that often results in significant financial burden. In the long run, it makes them believe that only money can bring happiness.
From my perspective, advertisements create a huge gap between rich and poor communities. As convincing as this view may appear, I agree with the idea that advertisements possess a negative impact not only on people’s everyday life but also their future.
