Throughout the ages, art and music have been acknowledged as forms of necessity in life. While it is true that technology plays a crucial role in daily lives in this modern era, it is undeniable that art and music are still cherished by people. However, I am not convinced that schools should add more art and music lessons.
Admittedly, technology has become a part of our society, however, art and music still hold a special place in people’s lives. The main reason is that art and music can offer some benefits that algorithms and machines cannot replicate. Art, for instance, is always seen as a therapy to relieve stress and anxiety without any side-effects. Enjoying hobbies such as painting, singing karaoke, or watching a film for a few minutes after a long day can significantly reduce stress and promote well-being. Another reason is that art and music can enrich people’s lives and create authentic human connections. For example, art gives people an opportunity to express themselves through words, rhythms, and colors. Additionally, art encourages creativity, imagination, and comfort and provides a way to connect with like-minded individuals in society.
On the other hand, I don’t believe that children should spend more time learning art and music at school. Although they are important for self-expression and creativity for children, core subjects like Mathematics, Science, and languages should be top priorities especially at the higher levels of education. These subjects provide essential skills and knowledge which can ensure educational and career pathways for high-school students. Moreover, every child has different enthusiasms and hobbies. To illustrate, for a child who is passionate about learning machines or technology, art lessons can be boring and unnecessary. Instead of increasing the time for art and music, the government and community should create more opportunities to learn art and music for children outside schools like drama classes, art institutes, or musical training centres.
In conclusion, in this technology-driven society, art and music still contribute as important aspects due to their unique and irreplaceable benefits. However, schools should prioritise teaching core subjects at schools, while the community should promote opportunities to expand the spectrum of art outside schools.
