Nowadays schools tend to make alterations in curriculums, where they remove the “less substantial” courses such as art, sports and music to add more demanding subjects such as Information Technology. I believe that these adjustments are not suitable for every student and classes should be carefully allocated for each scholar’s needs.
As we are in the digital age, it is important to acquire skills and knowledge about technological advancements, as some may want to pursue careers on the rise such as Computer Science and Software Engineering. However, establishments should be reminded that there are different routes for everyone and that some may want to become artist/ physical therapists in their future. Instead, students should receive a selection of classes, in which they can opt for a class they are more invested in.
Additionally, these mentioned subjects are environments in which students relax and take their minds off of the intense academic life they lead. For instance, in my own school, we do not have any classes besides the major subjects such as science, maths and english. Not only does this de-escalate the productivity rates of the students, but it also demotivates, as students do not have any time to spend on their well-being.
Another benefit of arts and sports is that it helps in the procurement of many skills. For instance, creative classes require critical thinking and fine motor skills in order to successfully express ideas. Sports lessons promote healthy bones while encouraging physical activity, which is substantial for their daily life; therefore, rather than removing them, the number of hours should be increased.
In conclusion, I am against the method that the schools are trying to enact by removing the mentioned subjects. Not only are there different career paths besides IT, these classes help students to de-stress while encouraging a broader spectrum of life.
