Band 5+: Children from age 7-11 now spend more time watching television and/or playing video games than before. What are the effects of this on children, families and society? What are the possible solutions to these problems?

Note: Both the topic and the essay were created by one of our users.

One of the purposes for innovation of television and online games is to relax the people in their leisure time. However, in recent years, there has been a concerning trend of kids aged 7-11 spending too much time in viewing television and gaming. This phenomenon has a great impact on the children, family, and society.

Primarily, too much screen time for kids can take away from reading, studying, as a result of that, they cannot concrete on schoolwork, activities and can affect greatly for these ages in health especially for nervous systems and physical health. That means that spending long periods sitting in front of a screen can lead to obesity and other health issues due to the replacement of physical activities. Moreover, prolonged viewing screens can affect children’s eyes and disturb sleep patterns, leading to fatigue and irritation.

The consequence of occupying most periods in gaming and television is significant decrease in interpersonal relationship between the family members. When children prefer screen activities rather than familial interactions, opportunities for meaningful moments, communication and bonding diminish, causing loneliness, isolation although having family to contact. On a broader societal level, the increased prevalence of screen time among kids can contribute to social isolation and decreased communication with others. Additionally, participation in outdoor activities and playing physically with friends have been dramatically falling this year due to playing online games, sitting in one place and not focusing on other cases.

But these issues can be properly minimized by limiting screen time and making the opportunities for doing other things such as reading the interesting and funny fictions, together playing and solving the puzzle cards and so on. The limitation time in engaging in games can indirectly promote the warming relationship with the family and socialization with the surrounding as well as it can involve partially in healthy and well growth. Also making the chances to do the above-mentioned things probably improve their brain working, problem solving skills and doing together that can generally raise communication methods.

Taking everything into consideration, spending more time on screens by children from age 7-11 has major impacts on physical and mental health, relation with others and their socialization. However, as the proverb says every problem has a solution, restricting time on viewing screens and above helpful methods can significantly mitigate the issues. So, as the children are the future stars of the world, all people are responsible for correcting if they are not on the right path, listening carefully to their words and acknowledging their emotions.
