China is planning to build a largest hydropower project in the world. It is one of China’s 5year plan and has been approved in December 2024.Building this dam will generate 3000KW tonnes of power and will be the largest renewable resource.Until now the Three gorges dam in Indus river in china is largest in world but the dam they are planning to building is going to massive than the three gorges. The Brahmaputra river spans across 4 countries namely China,India,Bhutan and WestBengal. The latter 3 rivers are downstream rivers. India is worried about this massive project as China may control the water flow to the downstream states. They have apprehensions that during the time of tensions they will have the power to flood the states.
Although China has agreed to cooperate and has made a statement that it would not affect the downstream states,There is no water sharing agreement present between the two states hence there is no transparency which raises concerns for India. India has decided to build their own dam in Brahmaputra river to regulate the flow of water for Northeastern states. Besides Bhutan already has multiple such small dam to control water flow in their states. From Environmentalist point of view building multiple such dams will tremendously affect the lives of water ecosystem.
In my point of view, building a dam will have its own consequences for neighbouring countries hence there should be formal water sharing agreement before building such dams.
